BlizzCon 2015: Senior Game Designer Brian Holinka Legion Interview Recap
by Magistrate - 8 years ago show comments
Holinka had a short Legion interview with the BlizzCon hosts on the virtual pass. This quick recap covers some reiteration on PvP changes, scaling zones and questing, and other coming changes and features.
PvP
- Players are very invested in PvE gear from dungeons, questing, and raids and often don’t like starting over from scratch–this is a major deterrent to jumping into PvP
- In PvP, people want to be on equal ground, like when you jump into a match in Overwatch
- Gear should make you feel a little stronger, but you shouldn’t be able to one-shot people who are just getting into PvP
- Gear plays minimally into PvP power
- Asian regions often organize big and interesting PvP world events
- Reactions to Ashran and PvP in general have informed team design and decisions in Legion
- PvP gives a sense of progression with Prestige and 15 honor levels to work through
- You can earn PvP specific abilities that don’t affect PvE game
- The team can now tune PvP separately from PvE
- Stats entering PvP zones will be modified to suite your class and spec automatically, putting you on equal footing with other players
Pet Battles
- Can’t speak specifically on some issues as it’s not his field
- There will be more pet battles, more pets, and more pet-related content
- He doesn’t know about higher pet levels
- Many players are heavily involved in pet collection
- A mobile pet battle game would be “awesome” (didn’t seem that anything is in the works, though)
Scaling Quests
- Scaling quests help friends play with each other regardless of level
- The need for more social play has influenced this update, as well as scaling leveling dungeons (see our dungeon recap)
- WoW is about playing with friends–things like character boosts and these systems help people get to relevant content and play with each other as quickly and easily as possible
Class Order Halls
- Class Order Halls allow for more social gameplay
- Dalaran will be more of a center for everyone to congregate in
- Order Halls allow for more specific experiences and let players of their own class spread knowledge with each other
Class Changes
- The team felt now was the time to address class identity due to the number of class-defining features that are now in the game, including Artifacts, PvP talents, and regular talents
- They want to revisit what each class means as a whole
