BlizzCon 2015: Cory Stockton Interview Recap

by - 8 years ago

The BlizzCon hosts had a little interview with lead game designer Cory Stockton on some of the coming features with World of Warcraft: Legion, including Class Order Halls, world quests, Challenger’s Keystones, and more.

Class Order Halls

  • A progression of the garrisons from Warlords of Draenor
  • Many liked the customization in garrisons but did not like that there was no one else around to interact with
  • Challenge with Class Order Halls was to make something that feels unique to your character but that you can also share with other people
  • Solution was to focus each Hall on a class and have all players of that class see and interact with each other in that Hall

World Quests and Flexible Questing

  • World Quests are obtained at max level
  • They focus on a specific faction
  • They were designed to extend questing after the level-up process
  • You accept them from an emissary in your Class Order Hall
  • A new one will pop up every day, but they differ from daily quests in that if you don’t do the World Quest for a day, you can do it the next day in addition to a new one
  • They help to extend the story–after leveling up through zones and dungeons, you will know the factions that the World Quests are for and how the quests play into each faction’s story
  • There was concern that players wouldn’t know how to “correctly” go through the flexible zones in Legion in a lore-friendly order
  • Legion solves this by associating packages of quests with a specific faction, which you learn more about as you finish that set of quests
  • If questing order doesn’t really matter to you, you can do whatever order and mixture of quests that you like
  • Players will be able to pick up quests in their Class Order Halls that go to whichever zone they prefer to quest in

Challenger’s Keystones

  • Challenger’s Keystones were taken from Diablo III: Reaper of Souls–where they are known as Greater Rifts and similar systems
  • They decided to evolve the Challenge Mode dungeon system started in Mists of Pandaria because after completing a Challenge Mode dungeon players were left with little higher challenge in 5-man’s
  • Keystones let players keep pushing themselves for higher difficulties and rewards
