Exploring Draenor: The Blood Moon

by - 9 years ago

Exploring Draenor delves into the hidden places of the world that will one day become Outland. From the volcanic landscape of Frostfire to the gloomy dells of Shadowmoon, these articles are your guide to events that are off the beaten path.

Location: Zeth’gol

Rewards: Vial of Red Goo

You’ve probably heard the yells from Hellfire Citadel, as the various bosses inside summon their creations to stalk Tanaan Jungle. Siegemaster Mar’tak positions Doomroller outside the gates of the citadel, and the spawn of Kormrok, Terrorfist, marauds near the Iron Front.

What you might not realise is that Kil’rogg Deadeye – or, more accurately, his tribe of Bleeding Hollow orcs – are also represented in the zone-wide announcements. Periodically, the Blood Moon will rise above Zeth’gol, in the north-western part of the zone. What the purpose of this massive orb of blood is we have no idea, but you can benefit from it all the same.

The Blood Moon

When the Blood Moon is summoned, make your way to Zeth’gol. There, Drained Blood Crystals will spawn on the ground all around the encampment. Turn outlines on in your settings to see them more easily. You will need to run around Zeth’gol and loot as many Crystals as possible to destroy the Blood Moon. Looting them in instant, but can only be done out of combat.

Drained Blood Crystal

Loaded down with Crystals? Return to the centre of the village and use them near the Blood Moon. Doing so will drain a tiny amount of health – around 80 – from its 10,000hp life total. This means that, to destroy the Moon, you will need 125 Crystals. Seeing red yet? This event is, of course, best done in a group.

When you have drained enough life from the Blood Moon, it will disappear and the Bleeding Hollow will try to salvage the remaining power, turning the remains into Remnant of the Blood Moon. Unfortunately, for such a long summon, this rare spawn dies very fast – make sure that you’re nearby when it’s about to be summoned. It will use two fairly non-threatening abilities: Blood Splash, which summons small adds, and Draw Blood, which will heal the creature for more depending on how many targets it hits.

Once the Remnant is finally destroyed, you have a chance – yes, only a chance – to loot the Vial of Red Goo from its corpse. This can turn you into a blood globule, like those seen around Zeth’gol, for three minutes out of every hour; yu will move at walking pace while transformed.

While I’m a big fan of many of Blizzard’s events in Tanaan Jungle, the Blood Moon is not one of them. The spawn process is too long, and doesn’t change throughout – there are no more or less Crystals, no adds that you can kill to speed up the summoning. Then, once the Blood Moon is finally destroyed, the Remnant dies fast and doesn’t have a guaranteed chance to drop its toy. Here’s hoping that Blizzard changes the vignette sooner, rather than later.
