WoW Token Limits Updated

by - 9 years ago

We’ve got a few more constraints on how the WoW Token works.

The chief change appears to be the long-term limit of 36 tokens purchased for gold every 24 months. Put another way, Blizzard doesn’t want you to buy more than three years of time at once. There are a couple ways to look at this:

  • It’s a bit punitive to people who are running multiple accounts. Granted, in most of the cases where people have got more than one WoW license on their B.net account, it’s usually no more than two or three. That’s still more than a year of gold-bought time.
  • If you’re someone who multiboxes a lot of characters through a lot of accounts, though, then this might not buy you more than a few months per license. Still, if you’re someone who can afford to drop hundreds of dollars per month on a video game, it’s probably just an inconvenience than anything else.
  • To an extent, it’s something of an anti-poopsocking measure; if Blizzard allowed you to spend every drop of gold you had on tokens until 2030, you wouldn’t have gold to do any of the things you need gold for in the game. That might lead to unhealthy play to farm up more gold, or the potential of you dropping real money to buy a token so you could get some gold back from the system… which is ultimately counter-intuitive to the objective of this system, where players who have real money and want gold are effectively financing players who have gold and want game time.

Even if we’re talking about multiple licenses, it’s likely that the vast majority of accounts only have the one license, and in my opinion (representative of Crow and only Crow, and not BlizzPro, any political party or corporate entity, ad nauseum) three years of time every two calendar years is a reasonable period. No one knows what’s going to happen down the line, so sacrificing a ton of gold now on the possibility that the game servers will still be up past 2018 doesn’t seem like a rational thing to do.

As many players are aware, there are certain limits in place regarding how many WoW Tokens can be purchased per Battle.net account, both from the in-game Shop and through the Auction House. Today, we’d like to provide a quick update on the current limits to help you better plan your Token purchases.

  • A maximum of 10 Tokens per week may be purchased for real money from the in-game Shop, to be sold on the Auction House for gold.
  • A maximum of 36 Tokens every 24 months may be purchased for gold via the Auction House, to be used for game time.
  • Players may only have one type of Token in their inventory at one time. If any character on a Battle.net account is currently holding a Token purchased from the in-game Shop, that player will not be able to purchase a Token from the Auction House. Likewise, if any character is holding a Token purchased from the Auction House, that player will not be able to purchase a Token from the in-game Shop.
  • Players may hold a maximum of 10 Tokens in their inventory at one time. This limit is shared across all characters on the Battle.net account.
