Exploring Draenor: Rai’vosh

by - 9 years ago

Exploring Draenor delves into the hidden places of the world that will one day become Outland. From the volcanic landscape of Frostfire to the gloomy dells of Shadowmoon, these articles are your guide to events that are off the beaten path.

Location: Shadowmoon Valley

Task: Kill

Rewards: Whispers of Rai’vosh and 10-20 Garrison Resources

Shadowmoon Valley holds many mysteries in its dark corners – and its lightest heights. On the plateaus surrounding Mount Kra’gor, high above the floor of the valley, a Shadowmoon Orc is trying to bind an air elemental – but the ritual doesn’t go particularly well for him.

You will find Windcaller Turog east of Exile’s Rise, in the northern part of the zone. Approaching will start his dialogue:

Windcaller Turog says: Spirits of air, wind, and all…

Windcaller Turog says: I bind this creature to my call!

Rai’vosh says: You meddle in powers…beyond your comprehension.

Rai’vosh launches Turog skyward.

Windcaller Turog says: Aaaaauuuuggghhhhh!

The elemental breaks free and attacks Turog, summoning a whirlwind to throw him high in the air (but I bet the view is great). Rai’vosh doesn’t take particularly well to being imprisoned, and will immediately attack you, as well. He has a direct-damage spell, Slicing Zephyr, and will summon a tornado that can blow you off the mountain (Call Furious Wind). Both of these are interruptible. He also has one spell that cannot be interrupted, and could cause you a bit of a headache: Sweeping Winds.

Sweeping Winds summons a gale around the shrine where Rai’vosh was summoned, blowing in across the valley and towards the mountain; it will blow you up the side if you’re not careful, and can easily push you into the Furious Wind tornadoes. As well as avoiding those, you’ll need to keep an eye on Rai’vosh himself; Sweeping Winds isn’t a channelled ability, and the elemental will still be attacking you. It’d be a bit more dangerous if it were blowing off of the mountain, but it’s still pretty hazardous.

Killing Rai’vosh will reward you with a slow fall item, which would be a lot more useful if it didn’t have an hour-long cooldown. Still, you take what you can get.

What was Turog doing in attempting to bind Rai’vosh? With his ability and title he is obviously a shaman, but also clearly a Shadowmoon orc – one who hasn’t turned to the void yet, presumably. We can assume that he’s one of the Exiles from the nearby camp; perhaps trying to control an elemental that will give his people an edge against the corrupt orcs that are left of his clan.

What about Rai’vosh? If he could break his bonds at any time, why did he allow himself to be captured in the first place? I’d put it down to the capricious nature of wind elementals – luring a summoner in, only to fry him to cinders with lightning at the earliest opportunity.
