Call to Arms Battleground Weekends Ending in Warlords

by - 10 years ago

Game Designer Desvin (a.k.a. Brian Holinka) took to the forums to announce that the Call to Arms system will be retired when Warlords of Draenor is released. It’s unclear if Holinka means in 6.0 or the actual street date for the expansion, but the bottom line is that the battleground weekends are going away.

Overall, if Blizzard’s data shows that folks aren’t engaging in certain BGs, and if the existence is a detriment to PVP rather than an incentive, then this is a solid move. I’m not sure how well the concept of a BG showcase weekend really plays out in terms of giving players a reason to queue for a particular battleground, so getting rid of the system feels like it’ll be a win for all parties.

One could argue that Call to Arms allowed new battlegrounds to have some temporary prominence after they’re introduced, but with the knowledge that Ashran is the focus of PVP for Warlords (and that consequently they don’t have any new BGs planned for the expansion), dropping the system won’t have an impact there either. There are better ways to get people to queue for battlegrounds, in any case.

We’ve removed Call to Arms in Warlords. Originally, the feature was added to bring some variety to the battleground experience and allow players who like a specific battleground to occassionally binge on it. But, like any feature, we have to weight the benefits with the consequences. Call to Arms has an adverse affect on queue times in a pretty profound way. When certain battlegrounds are up, one faction will tend to queue for Call to Arms while the other tends to avoid it. As a result, we’re going to remove it so that the majority of players are queuing through Random Battlegrounds.
