SDCC 2014: Warcraft Movie Details

by - 10 years ago

San Diego Comic Con 2014 is happening right now. Blizzard had their licensed product panel a couple days ago and today Legendary Pictures had a panel to show off their upcoming movies. We all knew Warcraft would be in the mix after last year when they showed a small conceptual teaser trailer before filming even began (which never was released out to the public).

A year later and filming has finished for the movie, but post production is going to last a while as the movie isn’t coming out until 2016. Legendary had some of the movie props available on the show floor, showing off the Alliance sword and shield and Doomhammer.

Duncan Jones did take the stage during the panel and said he was hoping to make the movie had a broader audience than just fans of the games themselves. “There’s an awful lot to draw on from Warcraft. We really want to make this an origin story. We want to show the world of Azeroth falls into conflict between orcs and humans. We want to make a film that is accessible to everyone.”

The Trailer

At that point, those who made the panel were given a small teaser trailer. It is doubtful this trailer will be released to the public since I am sure Legendary is not wanting to show an undone product as there’s probably more CGI work to do. The trailer showed off Lothar and Durotan giving their own little monologues. Lothar was mulling over in a voice over whether he’s spent more time protecting the king more than he has his own son. Durotan in his own voice over was thinking “I’ve led thousands of warriors into battle but I fear being a father. Does that make me a leader or a coward?” More dialogue is given as it shows the humans talking about death and if there’s any point to it and the orcs discussing how their hope is destroyed and if war is the only answer. The trailer than starts showing off some battles with magic and swords including Ben Foster, who is playing Medivh throwing some spells. There was also some mention of Paula Patton’s character as a green skinned orc aggressively licking someone. Slashfilm was describing the orcs “as if they looked like if Shrek was real, but much scarier and realistic. Lord of the Rings quality.” At that point, the 10 second clip of the animated logo was shown, which was the only thing released out to the public. Here’s hoping we’ll get something shown off at BlizzCon in November.

Duncan Jones after the panel signed autographs at the Blizzard booth for lucky fans who got a ticket earlier in the day.
