IGN was able to talk to actor Ben Foster on his role in the upcoming Warcraft movie.

We wrote earlier that the Warcraft film has finished filming, so now with the actors out in the wild and done doing their scenes, we’ll probably start hearing more about the characters in the movie and more about the story.

Ben Foster revealed that he got the role of Medivh. Many Warcraft enthusiasts will instantly recognize the name of the mage who helped open the Dark Portal with the orcish warlock Gul’dan.

Foster described the role of Medivh as:

“He came up in a time protecting an area, and the way he protected this area was through magic. As peace returned to this land he took a break. He hung up his staff, so to speak, or let his guns get dusty. We meet him as his friends are returning asking for his help in a battle.”

Foster is likely referring to the fact that Medivh was the last Guardian of Trisfal, which was a powerful group of protectors against incursions by demonic forces of the Burning Legion, a power that was passed down from his mother, Aegwynn. The friends he referred to are likely Prince Llane Wrynn and Anduin Lothar who were his childhood friends. The orcs were coming and the First War was about to begin.

If anyone has played the Warcraft games they will know that Medivh was corrupted by Sargeras since before he was even born and had helped the orcs in Black Morass and opened the Dark Portal. It seems highly likely that this whole scenario will probably play out in the movie.

Foster went on to comment:

“What’s exciting about Duncan Jones’ take on this video game is that it shows both sides of the war. It shows both sides of a conflict, which is exciting to me. It’s not just a video game turned into a movie. It’s asking, hopefully, an important question of, where do we limit our compassion for what we consider to be the bad guys?”

This is exactly to the true nature of what Warcraft is about. Who are the good guys and the bad guys? You can’t say Alliance are the good guys and the Horde are the bad guys as both sides actually have both evil and good within them.

I have to say, after seeing Ben Foster talk about his role as Medivh, it does sound like Duncan Jones is making this movie exactly what it needs to be and I think a lot of naysayers are going to be rather surprised on March 11, 2016.
