New Grinning Reaver, Warforged Nightmare & Nightmare Hitching Post

by - 10 years ago

If you saw the teaser bug-looking mount that the official Warcraft twitter account posted on Twitter the other day with the words “Is that a saddle?”, we now know what the mysterious mount is – the Grinning Reaver!  The source of the mount is unknown, but it is being added into the current PTR patch instead of 6.0 (the pre-expansion patch).  It is also a level 20 flying mount, which makes it likely this mount is a Blizzard store mount.

However, the second mount that also showed up on the PTR at the same time, is the one that has people really sitting up and taking notice because the Warforged Nightmare comes along with something we have only seen previously as a TCG item – a hitching post!

For those not familiar with the War Party Hitching Post TCG item, it summons a hitching post that allows any player above level 20 to summon a mount.  You can see this hitching post in action in an old Warcraft Screenshot of the Day from Cataclysm.  It is also a similar idea to the new strider mounts added to the entrance of the Darkmoon Faire.

The new hitching post is the Nightmarish Hitching Post  is the item, and when players click on the hitching post, it transforms their mount into the Warforged Nightmare – a flaming horse that is both a land and flying mount – similar to the headless horseman but with lots of flames. It also applies a 20 minute buff to players called Nightmarish Reins, which has a mechanical sound when the player is buffed, and then all mounts summoned by that buffed player will be in the form of the Warforged Nightmare.

Since TCG is no longer being published, there is plenty of speculation about how this might be obtained.  The name “Warforged” make people think that perhaps it is related to Siege of Orgrimmar somehow (since the better loot in SoO is called Warforged) and could be something they are adding to tide raiders over who are facing months of farming SoO still.  However, since the hitching post is such a unique item, people are wondering if it will be much harder to obtain.  Or it could be a Garrison addition for players in Warlords of Draenor.
