Interview With Druid Hoodie Artist Kageyama Satsuki

by - 10 years ago

Kageyama Satsuki is a prolific sketch artist with a consistent and funny art-style who recently drew attention for throwing out conceptual art for hoodies based on the worgen druid cat-form that’s prevalent in Kage’s sketch work. Popular response from followers prompted the creation of concepts for the other three druid races.

Aside from the splash that this has made in the WoW community, the derpkitty’s work has also caught some attention from both fans at Blizzard AND from J!nx, the apparel company that currently has the license for Blizzard clothing.

We reached out to Kage to ask a little about how these concepts have garnered a lot of attention lately.

BlizzPro: What first got you into drawing the Derp Kitty character?

Kage Satsuki: I’ve always been drawing, and was inspired by Doodlegnome in November 2013 to start scrawling and posting them online. I like cats, World of Warcraft and druids so naturally play a feral druid, which became my doodling avatar–Derpkitty!

BP: You often post food on your Twitter feed. What’s the Derp Kitty’s favorite meal?

KS: Derpkitty’s favourite meal would be a hearty one of red meat!

BP: Where did the inspiration for the hoodie sketches come from?

KS: ShaofHappiness and I were talking about our avatars’ inspired apparel. Some colleagues in my office wear hoodies with cat ears, so that was the starting point. After that it was just a matter of drawing inspiration directly from each races’ unique Cat Forms.

BP: Did you ever expect such a positive response when you first began sharing your sketches with the community?

KS: Honestly, no. I’m as far from a fashion designer as an artist can be and hold no special interest in clothes. I was just trying to think of what sort of ‘costume’ I might hypothetically attend Blizzcon in as Derpkitty. The design caught on, so I decided to do up the other races’ Cat Forms.

I got so excited when I saw J!nx was involved with tweets about this. I’ve been such a fan of derpkitty for so long now. Even though I don’t play a feral druid or a druid in general I would buy one just because they are so awesome.
