Dominic Cooper Joins Warcraft Movie, Drops Plot Hints

by - 10 years ago

As production begins winding up on Duncan Jones’ Warcraft film, a late addition joins the party: actor Dominic Cooper, most familiar for playing Howard Stark in Captain America and for recently reprising the role in the Agent Carter short on the Iron Man 3 blu-ray.

When asked about the film, Cooper even revealed a little about the story:

There’s a very human story at the heart of it because there’s a few of us that are humans in it that are up against tribes and problematic issues that exist in the world that we exist in… It’s happening all over the world at the moment and you see it happening all over. People have savaged their own lands and their own environment and they’re having to find a new environment in which to move into through the hostility of others.”

To interpret this more specifically within the lens of the Warcraft franchise and speculate a bit: the orcs are invading Azeroth because they’ve drained Draenor of resources, and it’ll be up to the humans of Stormwind to stop them. On the one hand, this actually makes the orcs more sympathetic than they were presented in Warcraft: Orcs and Humans; in that game, the orcs came through the portal because they wanted to conquer and obliterate, not because their homeworld was resource-starved. That narrative was downplayed as Blizzard moved to make the orcs more heroic over time, and what we’ll likely see in this film are orcs who are conquerors, but who are also on the brink of extinction. That desperation for survival is what will drive the conflict between the two factions… or at least, that’s my take on it. ^_^

Cooper is likely one of the more prominent names in the cast due to his recent involvement with Marvel, but there’s no telling what role he’ll play in the film. More information is bound to start cropping soon as filming gets underway, so stay tuned.
